« on: April 05, 2018, 06:12 PM »
These photos were taken on a trip to the San Diego Zoo in April of 2012. This exhibit opened on May 23, 2009 and features a 2.5 acre elephant habitat. Elephant Odyssey also features sculptures of prehistoric animals from Southern California's ancient past alongside its present day counterparts including lions, jaguars, tapirs, guanacos, cabybaras, camels, and California condors.

Here are some more photos of the Elephant Odyssey taken on my most recent visit.

The Elephant Odyssey section is based on the animals from Southern California's past. This sign depicts the area as it was 12,000 years ago.

This sign depicts the animals of today.

A prehistoric Dire Wolf sculpture.

A sculpture of a prehistoric deer.

A sculpture of Merriam's Terator, a prehistoric bird.

An African elephant. You can tell by the large ears.

An Asian elephant. You can tell by the small ears.

An elephant feeding tree. It's made of concrete and steel to keep it "elephant proof".

If you've been paying attention, you'll know what kind of elephant this is.

A pair of lions make their home in the Elephant Odyssey section. This male is doing what he does best...sleeping.

The female lion partaking in her favorite pastime as well.

A Secretary Bird.

A North American Pronghorn.

A pair of Guanacos.

One of San Diego Zoo's many man-made waterfalls.

The cave-like Kid's Theater shows continuous educational videos for children.

Not all the animals on display here are big as elephants. Here are a pair of Pond Turtles.

You can find some creepy insects on display too, like this Mexican Fireleg Tarantula.

Spiny Stick Insects

A Rhinocerous Beetle

One of the most impressive additions is not inside the area, but one that takes you to it.

The new 70 foot high Basher Bridge spans one of the zoo's many canyon's, providing a more convenient, and breathtaking, way to get to the Elephant Odyssey.

"It's just another path with railings, I don't see what's so .... oh. Oh."

Man, that bridge is beautiful. They don't make zoos to this level where I'm from  ;)

On that visit, I think I was more excited by the bridge than any of the exhibits. :P
