Julius Katz & Sons



As we head underneath the Hyperion Bridge, on the right side of the street is Julius Katz & Sons.


All the Buena Vista St. shops have fictional backstories, and this one begins with Julius Katz, who opened up a small radio and watch repair shop. This window display shows Julius Katz, at work.



As the story continues, Julius Katz's sons soon joined him and expanded the business.



Disney historians will be interested to know that Julius Katz actually refers to Julius the Cat, an animated cat who accompanied the live-action Alice character in Disney’s silent “Alice in Cartoonland” shorts of the 1920s. (Julius is the one holding the cake.)



Inside, you'll find a large selection of merchandise comprised mostly of home décor, kitchen gadgets, dinnerware, towels & aprons, and seasonal items and gifts.

I'm always fascinated by the vast array of chandelier styles found in Disney shops and restaurants.

I wonder how the tuning dial works on that radio? (the 2nd radio pic) It looks like an old-style telephone dial. Did it rotate the same way? Or did you just punch the buttons? It looks like you have to twiddle the knob, but I don't know what the holes are for. (Not expecting you to know the answer, just curious.) It's a beautiful radio, though; with that aerodynamic curve enclosing the speaker and the rich, warm wood grain.

^Good questions. And I have no idea what the answers would be.

I love the hidden references in Buena Vista Street. The names of many of the stores are great nods to actual people or even characters. Amazing photos Shyguy, they always make me feel like I am there!
