San Diego Zoo - Australian Outback: Food, Shops, Etc

Sydney's Grill

Sydney's Grill is the main eating spot in the Australian Outback. But don't expect any food from "down under." It's mainly BBQ and burgers.

Watch out for Koalas on your way to the restaurant.

Well, the only koala you'll run into out here is this sculpture.

Like most eateries at the zoo, Sydney's is a simple, counter service restaurant. But the Aboriginal-style decor is a nice touch.

There's a nice assortment of beverages and chips to go with your meal.

Salads, wraps, and fresh fruit.

These majestic palm trees line the spacious, outdoor dining patio.

What- no Vegemite?!? You can't say "g'day mate" without Vegemite in the Land Downunder. :P  I only tasted it once, and that was enough. I think it's made from koala spit (or koala something.)

Sydney's Shoppe

Sydney's Shoppe features a very nice selection of Australian-themed apparel, books, toys, and a large assortment of gift items.

A small cart sits out front, loaded with merchandise.

The shop offers a large assortment of t-shirts and plush toys.

There's also a large selection of apparel and gifts for kids.

Children's books and plush toys.

You can also pick up some Aborigine artwork.

Undersea-themed merchandise.

A nice, varied selection of hats.

And there's mugs, cups, picture frames, snow globes, and other knick knacks.

And don't forget to grab a paper pad made from recycled elephant poop.

All proceeds go to Koala Conservation.

I didn't know they had elephants, hippos, pandas, rhinos, and tigers in Australia (plush toys). Learn something new every day!

I like the Aboriginal artwork. I'm guessing it looks best when several are grouped together like they have here.

I'd buy some of that elephant poop paper- I'm weird that way. I also saw a T-shirt I wouldn't mind having.

Koalafornia Boardwalk

The Koalafornia Boardwalk stage puts on various shows throughout the year, mostly catered to children.

Dr. Zoolittle has moved from the Children's Zoo, which is soon closing for its remodel, to put on his shows here.

And here's the man himself...Dr. ZooLittle! Nice hat.

Animal characters, like this Panda, join Dr. ZooLittle for a show filled with songs, magic, and even a little educational information about the animals on display in the Australian Outback.

A young volunteer participates in a magic trick.

A friendly Lion helps perform another magic trick.

A Polar Bear joins the show, with spray bottle in hand. During the summer months, many of the gags involve spraying the audience with water.

The entire cast ends the show with a song.

Boardwalk Beer Garden

Right outside the Boardwalk Stage is the Boardwalk Beer Garden, a small stand that offers snacks, soft drinks, and beer.

If you're looking for a light meal, you can order a hot dog with chips. In addition, there's popcorn, chips, cotton candy, frozen lemonade, and assorted drinks.

The menu.

Koala Cart

The Koala Cart is located near Sydney's Grill and provides snacks for guests who aren't looking for a full meal.

Pretzels and churros are the main offering here.

If you're looking to wet your whistle, they serve Icees in many flavors in addition to assorted soft drinks.
