Seasons 16-17

A ton of major things happened these two seasons. A new kids area opened up in 1990, themed to a racetrack and of course the Looney Tunes... and the park invested a ton of money in infrastructure, the most major being a completely redone, and repaved parking lot.

The parking lot shrunk in size, but the old and bigger parking lot was too big and unnecessary.

Bus parking was added.

As well as preferred parking. The old picnic area was also removed and moved to a closer location. It was built on top of part of the old parking lot.

New Looney Tunes themed signs help people remember where they parked.

A shuttle bus was added from a drop off parking lot.

More foliage was added, this would be a common theme for these coming seasons.

This is where part of the old parking lot would be. Of course now it is home to another attraction, but for a while it would just be dirt and mud, covered by bushes.

Multiple new food offerings were added, here is a new ice cream stand towards the front of the Frontier.

Some hot dog stands popped up around the park as well.

Desperado lost its snack stand and clothing store this season. The spot of the old clothing store is foliage and a rock fountain, while the old snack stand was replaced with a smaller mobile one.

The old Spanish Restaurant in Fiesta Square was completely remodeled. It lost its seating area due to the kids area, but it turned into a much better Burrito Bonanza!

As you can see here, there is even more foliage added.

Party Train had been removed completely, and Blue Wave was relocated yet again to Party Train's former spot.

The Grill Time Restaurant had been renamed the Bugs Bunny Grill, and given some new decorations!

After the kids area was added in 1990, for 1991 the park did not get a new attraction, however it did get a cool new stunt show!

This is where the entrance to the new kids area is.

Due to the sheer size of this update, I'll continue on with the kids area for the next update... Stay tuned!

Season #16 1990

As promised this update will be showcasing the new kids area for 1990!

The area was once a desolate pathway connecting Desperado's Den and Thrill City.

Upon entering you see a tire-themed fence and a highway "exit" sign for the "racetrack."

There were two flat rides here, this one being dubbed "Taz's Racecar."

And a Bugs Bunny themed "Bugs Bunny Test Track."

The middle section of the area includes an asphalt walkway themed to a street with the main attraction being a car ride dubbed...

....The Raceway

It is of course reminiscent of the old "Vintage Autos" ride, but to a much smaller scale.

The area incorporated the stage for Looney Tunes related shows, as well as building a new food stand.

The new kids area of 1990 proved to be a major success, and would lead to a kiddie coaster being added here eventually. Of course it is extremely small for a kids area, but provides a very beautifully themed part of the park with tons of foliage and lots to look at, giving parents a nice place to sit down and watch their kids ride their favorite ride over and over.

As previously stated, for 1991 the park received a new stunt show, however things would change in 1992.

In 1992, Time Warner would increase its ownership in Six Flags, making Six Flags Arizona officially a Time Warner park.

With this would come (as you all know) many DC Comics affiliated attractions, and MUCH better overall theming of the park.

For the 1992 season Six Flags would add an INDOOR Batman Stunt Show. Can any of you guess what would come for the 1993 season? If you can't figure it out, just stay tuned for the next update where I'll hint at the major 1993 addition!

Season #18 1992

This season brought a new indoor stunt show!

While most Six Flags parks at the time received an outdoor Batman stunt show, SFAz got an indoor one. This is due to two factors.

a.) Fort Wonder is already a huge outdoor venue, building a second would be impractical.

b.) It is very hot in Arizona, and even Fort Wonder has shorter shows (due to the heat). An indoor theatre allows for longer and 'cooler' shows.

This would be the season Time Warner started to take control of Six Flags. This would start the new trend of better theming, and much more Time Warner heavy theming (such as the above Bruce Wayne Theatre).

Notice anything different about this picture?

Yes, Space Shuttle had to be moved in order to make room for the Bruce Wayne Theatre.

Unfortunately the spot it took over was home to the former Bumper 2 Bumper bumper cart ride. The park would not see another bumper carts ride for many years. However Space Shuttle did shine in its new location for quite some time! It would tower over the whole section for many years as well!

Along with the Bruce Wayne theatre in American Avenue, construction began behind it, and rumors started speculating about what it could be.

With Six Flags Great America recently receiving the first ever inverted coaster, would Six Flags Arizona be next?

Of course when the black Bolliger & Mabillard track was spotted in the background the rumor was confirmed.

At the end of 1992 this advertisement was released.

Stay tuned to see more of Batman: The Ride!

Season #19 1993

This season brought a drastic change to the American Avenue section of the park as it got completely redone in order to accommodate the new roller coaster, Batman: The Ride!

The old sign was removed and replaced with this sign, letting you know you entered Gotham.

Unfortunately this would be Cardinal's last year at the park as it stood SBNO for the entire season.

Americana received a new name; Gotham Outfitter, some facades were attached to the building as well.

Wonderland falls was renamed The Penguin's Splashdown.

Not much else changed about it except some minor thematic elements (ex. the penguin statues and the piping)

The bathrooms were remodeled and had many thematic elements such as the piping and billboard added to fit in with the Splashdown look.

Udderworldly ice cream was renamed Mr. Freeze ice cream. Some "snow" was added and a facade on the right of the building was added on as well.

The most drastic thematic change was the facades added on to the two food stands by Batman (formerly Pizza Pen and Chief Beef).

Uncle Alfred Pizzeria opened up, a nod to of course none other than Batman's buddy Alfred!

Gotham Drive-In served hamburgers, fries, and milkshakes to hungry patrons waiting to go on Batman!

The eating area gave great views of the new coaster.

Don't worry because the next update I will showcase everything you need to know about Batman: The Ride and its opening season. Stay tuned for that one folks!

Season #19 1993

Upon walking towards Batman you encounter the BATMOBILE. Although not as hi-tech as the other Six Flags' batmobiles, this one was given a more "rustic" look.

You walk through pillars signifying you have entered Gotham City Park.

Gotham Park is a beautiful queue filled with foliage and fountains guests can enjoy while they wait.

Eventually however you hit "the wrong side of the tracks" leading you to a queue house with some thematic elements as seen here.

You then enter the Gotham sewers as the sound of water droplets play over speakers.

And then you finally make it to the Batcave, where you get to see all of Bruce Wayne's favorite gadgets and even his suit!

After exiting the ride you walk over some of the track, giving a truly excellent view of the ride.

Batman is truly a visually stunning ride, offering guests something they have never seen before (in 1993). Due to the park's mostly flat land it can be seen from almost anywhere in the park too.

At 105 feet tall, 50 mph, and with 5 inversions, Batman still packs a punch today, being one of the park's most reliable rides to date!

I hope you all enjoyed my showcase of Batman: The Ride and stay tuned for next season!

*There are some workshop items at play here such as the Batman "suit" and the Batman 3-D logo in the station and the ride sign itself.

*I will eventually release a POV of this ride and some off-ride footage as well as a workshop for it too, just not yet (a POV wouldn't be too accurate given the park is in "1993" :P)*

I like how the queue starts out all "happy, happy, joy, joy"- a walk in the park. Then... things turn darker and darker; literally and thematically, until we end up in the dark and brooding Batcave. And the cave is all yellow and black; Batman's favorite colors. :D  A valiant effort on the Batmobile. But like you said, it looks a little 'rustic'. Clever idea though- to take an in-game car (KnightRider?) and slap some 'Bat' stuff on it. That's a nice action shot with the Batman train twisting down the first drop.

Catching up on the last 2 updates...  I like the way the surrounding area was re-themed for upcoming Batman ride, just some re-names and mild theming, the way a park would do it.  But then for the actual ride you went all out, right down to the batcave itself for an attraction that was themed up from the beginning.  Looks like a fun coaster too!

I've been following this forum for some time and I cannot hold back anymore words to say! This is amazing and absolutely beautiful. Your work is one of the reasons I came back in to playing Planet Coaster! I cannot wait to see how this continues to progress. Batman looks great :D

Season #20 1994

Upon entering the park this season you would find some small yet noticeable differences, such as remodeled ticket booths and guest relations!

And a slightly remodeled Six Flags Cafe and Hats! store!

Now on to the real highlights of this season.....

Thrill City is gone! Arizona State Fairgrounds is in! Time Warner is now in full swing with retheming the park. Over the next couple of years there will be even more theming added to the park! Gotham was  just the beginning!

Arizona State Fairgrounds caused a remodel of the entire Thrill City area. Some buildings were just repainted such as Arizona Style.

Others were demolished and replaced, such as the Pizza Stand. Now a restaurant that serves multiple food types "Justabout' Everythang'" and a coffee shop "A Fine Cup" have taken the place. Today both these stands are very different, but the look is the same.

The game stands were remodeled and given a more "Fairgrounds" vibrant look.

Unfortunately this season Bugs Bunny Grille would be completely gutted, with only the exterior remaining. It would be repainted and transformed into the "Star Grille." The true restaurant style would be replaced with the theme park style buffet line.

The area is certainly much more vibrant now.

Of course a new area isn't complete without a new ride!

Scizzer 3000! A space-themed ride would take the place of Phoenix.

Smoke? Check. Strobe lights? Check. 90's grunge music? Triple check! At the time this ride would prove extremely popular, of course now that is not the case. But the strobes, the smoke, the loud music, and the spinning, all proved to give guests a fantastic experience! This would also be the parks first indoor ride of any kind!

The last small change for this season would be....

Coca-Cola! That's right Six Flags upped its marketing game this season setting forth a chain of events that would lead to the advertisement crisis Six Flags is in now!  :P ::)

Right next to the Bruce-Wayne Theatre in Gotham City would be the addition of this facade including Coca-Cola vending machines and misters for people to cool down.

This wouldn't be the last of Coca-Cola marketing either, as it continues to this day!

Anyway hope you guys enjoyed the somewhat serious yet somewhat subtle changes and additions of this season. I'll be posting some in park footage and some Scizzer footage soon! Stay tuned!

I like how some of the buildings retain their old west/rustic look even as the park changes ownership and progresses into the future. And I love the look of the Star Grille; the subdued pink color and the way the center portion of the building is set back from the wings on either side. The Scizzer/Scrambler looks much more impressive as an indoor ride. :)

I don't know how I missed this project. Its great. It really does remind of a Six Flags Park. I'm interested to see what happens as technology pushes the boundaries for new coasters and rides.

Nice job!
